Unusual visitors

The week before Christmas last year we went on holiday for a few days to Lorne on the Great Ocean Road.  We went with our friends and their kids and we all staying in a house together which backed onto a forest.

We were in the process of unpacking our clothes when Jack, the youngest of our friend’s children came running into our bedroom, incredibly excited by the bird that was on the balcony. By the time we walked to the balcony there were a total of 13 cockatoos sat staring at us!  They were incredibly tame. The kids were hand feeding them. Within no time at all 5 Kookaburras and 3 Australian King Parrots had also joined us. I have never seen anything like it! Given the Kookaburra’s penchant for raw meat we thought it best not to let the kids hand feed them!

For anyone who has not been to Lorne, I definitely would recommend a trip there. There are lots of little restaurants, cafes, shops and the beach is beautiful. It’s also a great place to explore the rest of the Great Ocean Road from and you never know who may show up on your doorstep…
